On September 30th, we celebrate my sister Val
Who on that day breezed through the birth canal.
Not one for fanfare, nor big on affection
Could’ve been avoided had my folks used protection.
Being an only child for the first few years
She basked in attention from family and peers.
First born was her right, she ruled the nest
All part of her plan, till I placed second best.
Growing up she made friends every year at school
When they were busy, she’d pretend I was cool.
Her social circle expanded once she got older
Until I was frozen out by that bitch’s cold shoulder.
She made the move to Calgary, which is still called home
With rotating roommates, she was never alone.
An independent woman, bought her own first house
At the age of 25, prior to finding a spouse.
Marriage and kids were far down the list
Not a maternal bone in her body was known to exist.
She became quite the momma bear, devoted and strong
The patience of a saint herding three males along.
Friends are high priority, she treats each one as such
Always makes an effort to meet and keep in touch
For all of us who know you, and consider ourselves blessed
We raise a glass to you, and wish you the fuckin’ best.
