We grew up in a classic 50’s style household. Dad was the breadwinner, Mom was the stay-at-home wife. In those days, traditional roles were a helluva lot easier to decipher than the blurred lines of today.
In honour of Father’s Day, we’re diving into differences from one generation to the next. If you listen closely, you’ll hear our mates muttering there’s nothing wrong with today’s teenagers that 20 years won’t cure.
Then: Dad waved good luck from the hospital parking lot.
Now: Scott stood guard at the head of my bed, while I swore and stomped the floor. All ’cause our big baby came out a very small door.

Then: Dad bragged that he’d never changed a single diaper on either kid.
Now: Scott was left alone with a 6 month old, so I could enjoy a girl’s golf weekend.
Then: Always the provider, Dad brought home Grade A beef, chicken, or pork to be prepared for dinner every day [always eaten at lunch time].
Now: Scott brings home take-out.

Then: One played Oh Snap, Speed, and Old Maid card games with us.
Now: The other played Barbie’s, had tea parties, and painted each other’s nails.
Then: Dads of teenage daughters took advantage of hormonal chaos to disappear, only to materialize at the curling rink/golf club.
Now: This Dad bought her tampons, ibuprofen, and ice cream.

Then: One would show up to our ball game and watch from the car.
Now: The other one never missed a ballet class, soccer practice, baseball game, or volleyball tournament.
Then: We bonded on family vacay spending h o u r s driving in the hot car.
Now: He entertained her on flights to Hawaii, Palm Springs, Phoenix, and Mexico.

Then: Dad scratched my back every night before bed.
Now: Scott helps with her homework.
Then: Most communication from Dad came through Mom – like a medium…only she’s small.
Now: They discuss and debate politics, religion, gender equality, finances, sports, etc.

Then: One would stare you straight with ‘the look.’
Now: On late nights, the other leaves a puke bucket by her bedside, and a glass of water on the nightstand.
Then: We gave him rides to and from parties with his friends.
Now: He gives her rides to and from parties with her friends.

Then: One wasn’t afraid to pass out the hunnie dolla bills.
Now: The other one hands over his debit card.
