If I had to grade myself, I’d say 80% of the time I’m a great Mom, and the rest of the time I dial it in. My role was much clearer when the kids were young. I supervised schedules, snacks, structure, and morals. It’s a totally different story when they turn 16. A new licence puts them in the drivers seat.
It feels good to let go of the wheel. I can increase my wine consumption now that I’m sitting in the passenger seat. I used to ask where they were going, and with whom. These days, I ask “Is there room for one more?” I just wanna blend in, play beer pong, and hang out with my new buddies. And they’re saying “Who brought their Mom?”
We stumbled (literally) upon a group of 16 to 18 year olds who were more than willing to give unguarded answers to the following questions. We converted the data into a “Teen Quiz” so you can see where your chips fall. For the record, my daughter Abby took the quiz twice, and landed on “What Kids?”…both times.
