Mamapalooza: Three Generations of Strong Women

This week the Sisterhood celebrates Motherhood. In honour of Mother’s Day, we’ve joined forces with our adorable Mom and Lori’s lovely daughter Abby, who share their opinions of life as young women. What we learned from the similarities and differences is we’ve come a long way baby!

Values

Mom: You’re no better than anyone else and no one is better than you.

Us: Never underestimate the importance of having fun.

Abby: Treat others how you want to be treated.

Personality

Mom: Very thoughtful, family orientated, silly fun-loving humour.

Us: Lori: Strong, witty, outgoing, sarcastic, mischievous
Val: Smart, social, giving, stoic, engaging

Abby: Compassionate, adventurous, goofy, approachable, clumsy, sunshine.

What were you expected to become?

Mom: No restrictions – never really thought about the future. Always knew she wanted to be a mother.

Us: Mom insisted we take post-secondary, as it wasn’t our first choice. She encouraged us to travel before settling down. We took her words to heart, and waited until our 30’s to get married.

Abby: University is mandatory, you can’t get anywhere without a degree anymore. I was taught to always be respectful and kind, and take every opportunity to see the world.

Favourite thing about growing up

Mom: Grew up in a large family, 5th out of 7 children. Loved spending time at Grannie’s house. Would meet up with friends at the playground across the street.

Us: Everytime my older sister Val’s friends were busy, and she had no one else to hang with, she would play with me!

Abby: Baking with Grandma, not having a job, cousins that are like brothers but you don’t have to live with them, doing arts and crafts, making lots of friends along the way.

What did you get in trouble for?

Mom: The first time she unwittingly drank punch spiked with booze. Got so drunk she had to have a sleepover. Threw up for the next three days. Never ever overdid it again.

Us: At 16, I drank lemon gin for the first and only time, and threw up in my garbage can. Mom found it in my closet…two days later.

Abby: Lied about who I went to see a movie with in grade 8. Mom has a way of finding out anything and everything.

What did you do for entertainment?

Mom: Went to movies Saturday night, school plays and dances, skating, listened to the record player, walked around with friends, swam in the creek. Didn’t own a car until much older.

Us: Smokin’ in the boy’s room, cruisin’ the dub (A&W), swimming at the outdoor pool, spending every waking moment with friends.

Abby: Bonfires in friends backyards, go out for brunch with girlfriends, impromptu trips to Banff, going to the mall, using the rope swing and swimming at the cove, going for drives with no destination, the occasional movie.

How did you dress as a young woman?

Mom: Mid-calf pencil skirts, poodle skirts, blouses and sweaters, pedal pushers, saddle shoes, ballerina flats, jeans rolled up to mid-calf. Jeans weren’t allowed at school!

Us: High waisted jeans, velour track suits, neon, stirrup pants, overalls, polo shirts, oversized sweaters with leggings, giant earrings, slouch socks, peter pan boots, chinese shoes.

Abby: Short shorts, cardigans, t-shirt dresses, leggings, combat boots, plaid shirts, ripped jeans, crop tops, converse, minimal jewelry, flowy tank tops, graphic t-shirts.

Why are Mom’s so special?

Us: She is special to a lot of people, but we’re the only ones who know what her heart sounds like inside and out.

Abby: They are your rock, your shoulder to cry on, and your best friend.

Thanks Mimi! Bring back memories of when the boys were young and forgot to acknowledge Mother’s Day. I was so pissed I refused to Mother for the next week. No meals, no groceries, no laundry. They’ve never forgotten again!!
