In all honesty, the first time we met, I didn’t like you.
I was in my late teens and I wasn’t looking for anything serious. We ended up at the same party, you hung out with a couple of people I knew. They said you had a bubbly personality and were a lot of fun to be around. I didn’t get that vibe. You left a bad taste in my mouth, and quite frankly, I thought you were obnoxious.
It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that we met up again. You had mellowed out a little more by then. I was still dabbling my toe in other waters, and could only handle you in small doses. A few of my friends were starting to sing your praise, but they were all professionals, which left me out of that sophisticated crowd.
We began a lasting friendship when I was in my early 30’s. We celebrated birthdays together and spent the summer kicking back on the patio. You showed me your true colours, and I quickly became enamored with you. We started seeing each other more often, and the relationship was starting to get serious. You made me laugh and that’s a quality I look for.
You were now a big part of my life, and we were raising a kid together. As responsibilities increased, so did my stress level, so I depended on you to calm me down. However, things weren’t always rosy. Sometimes you made me sick to my stomach, and I would stay in bed all weekend just to avoid you.
By my forties, we had it figured out. I had expensive tastes and you were always able to accommodate me. I loved going fine dining and dancing the night away with you. My mouth waters at the thought of your body and delicious scent. I enjoy taking you home and having a romantic night by the fire. You make me feel sexy.
Approaching my 50’s, I can say in all honesty, you are the love of my life. I can’t imagine a day without you. You are truly the gift that keeps on giving.
So without further ado, help me raise a glass of you…to you…
